Rtn George Friend OAM was invited on behalf the ANARE Club, to participate in the official launch of our newest Antarctic Research Vessel RSV Nuyina in Hobart Tasmania on 18 December, 2021.
Broadwater Southport Rotarian and President of Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE), Major George Friend OAM, was our guest speaker at our Friday Breakfast meeting on 11 February, 2022.

George said it was an absolute honour & privilege be invited on behalf the ANARE Club, to participate in the official launch of our newest Antarctic Research Vessel RSV Nuyina in Hobart Tasmania, the ship's home port, on 18 December, 2021. Wow! A magnificent occasion in the presence of the highest in the land.

The Official Launch of the RSV Nuyina hosted by Honourable Sussan Ley MP, Minister for the Environment, was held in the Port of Hobart’s Macquarie Wharf 02 Building, adjacent to the moored RSV Nuyina, on Saturday 18 December 2021 commencing at 9.30 am, before a crowd of approximately 150 invited guests.

With Representatives of over 12 Nations gathered for this most auspicious event in our exemplary history of polar exploration & research.

George felt humbled to be given the opportunity to present on behalf of the Anare Club not just the Ships Bell to Nuyina, but also engraved Whistles for the two Captains, a traditional ANARE Traverse pennant (steeped in so much history), a 70th Anniversary Club flag, books and plaque for the Mess & Bridge. “It’s all the bell & whistles!” he said.

Great credit to all those involved in the broad spectrum of not just delivering this magnificent ship (Damen & Serco) to the wonderful AAD Team under the stewardship of my friend the Director Kim Ellis.

As well as every level of Government who have embraced and put their shoulder to the wheel in supporting & driving this unique and most important endeavour in the National interest.

George's photo collection can be viewed on his Facebook page. And there are many more disseminated on a variety of sites and media outlets.

The transcript of the President George’s Speech is available here.

Enjoy! A once in a lifetime (or 30 year contract) opportunity. Go to https://www.anareclub.org/home/ and join up!
